Part Three: sketchy sicily

Palermo was by far the sketchiest of cities that we’ve visited. As we searched in the rain for our hostel, we found ourselves in an abandoned courtyard clearly under construction with no clue where to go. After a bit of worried searching, we finally found our way to the top floor of building with this courtyard. Our hostel was in an apartment there.
That night, after our concerned first impression of Palermo, the weather cleared up and we went for pizza and appetizers. The appetizers were different vegetables deep-fried. I’m not into vegetables, but I can eat almost anything that has been deep-fried… Then we went for gelato. I got a scoop of stracciatella and a scoop of nutella in a little roll (brioche). So good. So so so good.

The next morning, the weather was beautiful! We had a slow morning. After we got cappuccino and a pastry for breakfast, we walked around and saw the city. We tried ricotta cannoli (so good—never thought I’d like cheese as a dessert and, moreover, with chocolate so much) then sette veli (a cake of seven layers of different kinds of chocolate) at a hidden little high-class café in a sketchy little neighborhood (kind of typical of Palermo, actually). Then we had a slice of pizza for a euro and went to the market where we got some nice strawberries, gnocchi, and other goodness for dinner (we’ve become especially fond of pastries of late, so we got some cookies too).

We left at 7am next morning for a nice trip through Italy to Florence!
